America is on FHIR!
Less than 8 years after it emerged from the HL7 Fresh Look Task Force, HL7 FHIR has become a transformational force in healthcare information interoperability. While it has grown in scope and global implementation, the implementation community in the US has evolved as a pivotal agent of change. In December 2014, the Argonaut Project, a private-sector initiative to accelerate FHIR implementation was first announced. Since then, it has become a model for the growth of FHIR in the US. It is the centrepiece for health information exchange for Carequality (Sequoia Project) and CommonWell, as well as the technical foundation of the recently announced Apple EHR, embedded into the iOS operating system. HL7 FHIR implementation has grown exponentially into other realms, including the payer community (Da Vinci Project), BioPharma (TransCelerate), Veterans Affairs (Lighthouse Gateway), the Genomics community (Sync for Science), the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), and Precision Medicine (All of Us). For many implementations, this was made possible by the emergence of FHIR for Bulk Data.
